We're Gonna Look So Wierd

I was lamenting to a friend last night (who became a Christian within the last year) how I try so hard to make Christianity attractive to our culture, but that it’s just so hard when the Bible says things that are totally unnatural to this world.

Like loving God more than your family. Archaic instructions about submission and sexuality. Opening your home to prostitutes and the homeless. Did you hear about the Christians who, instead of running from the plague as it spread through Europe, they ran to help the people who had contracted it? Jesus says, you better count the remarkably high cost before you jump into this.

How could I get people on board with that?! We’re going to look so weird and we may even die for it. Why would people want that?

But then my friend said, that is what attracted him to Christianity. He wanted something wholly different than what our culture had to offer.

Maybe I’m going about this the wrong way. Maybe I shouldn’t try to ignore the weird stuff, and shouldn’t live with one foot in each camp in order to try and make this look attractive to our culture. Maybe I should just try to really, I mean REALLY, live what the Bible says, and let all this “weird” and dangerous stuff be a beacon of something wholly different for those who are looking for it.
