This could be disputed, but I was thinking…
Maybe heaven will be heaven because there will be no more scarcity. In a place where we are never threatened with not having enough food, value or love, maybe all of the ugly things that come out of us would go away. And where would be the only place where that eternal abundance would exist? Wherever the source of all abundance is constantly present and constantly provides. With God!
And this would describe why hell would be what it is, and why it would be so bad– because there would be lots of scarcity (because God, the creator of all things wouldn’t be around) and lots of people going to desperate measures to resolve that scarcity… until it all eventually runs out.
I think maybe we sin when we are threatened with not having enough value or not being able to provide for what we want or need.
So, before we get to heaven or hell, what could be our present day application? If we could get good at distinguishing which of our motivations is driven by scarcity, instead of by beautiful opportunity I think we’d be able to live a lot more like we’re in heaven.
